What is a Solid?

A solid is a state of matter in which all particles are close together, usually in a geometric pattern. The attracting forces of a solid are stronger than the energy in the particles so all the particles can do is vibrate a little.

Solids have a definite shape and volume.

Ice is a Solid because its particles are tightly held together in a geometric pattern. The particles do not have enough energy to break apart and beat the attracting forces but enough to vibrate.
