This
part of my site was designed to help you learn the terms and vocabulary
of state changes. Just print out this page and you will have a study
sheet with a lot of important vocabulary and terms you will need.
I hope it makes your life easier.
When something cools, it loses energy and when something gains heat
it gains energy.
Matter
Everything
that has mass and takes up space is matter. Energy is not matter.
States of Matter
All matter exist in one of four states, but one of these states
(Plasma-like the sun) will not be a part of this site. There are
three states of matter in water. They are solid, liquid and gas.
Solid
This is the state of matter in which all particles are held together
in a geometric patterns. They have enough energy to vibrate but
not enough to move around.
Liquid
This is the state of matter in which particles have enough energy
to move over and around each other, but not beat all attracting
forces.
Gas
This is the state of matter in which all particles have enough energy
to move freely and overcome all attracting forces.
Condensation
Condensation is the process in which a gas becomes a liquid through
cooling.
Freezing
Freezing is the process in which a liquid becomes a solid through
cooling.
Sublimation
Sublimation is the process in which a solid becomes a gas without
going through the liquid state.
Frost
Formation
Frost formation is the process in which a gas becomes a solid without
going through the liquid state.
Evaporation
This is the process in which a liquid becomes a solid through gaining
heat.
Melting
Melting is the process in which a solid becomes a liquid through
the process of gaining heat.
